New Mexico Republicans have called for the impeachment of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham after she issued an executive order limiting the ability to purchase certain firearms and certain sizes of ammunition magazines.
The Republican-controlled House of Representatives alleged that the governor had acted beyond the scope of her authority and said that her executive order was an illegal act. Members of the GOP’s House leadership argued that Grisham’s executive order was “rogue behavior” and that she had violated the Second Amendment of the Constitution.
The Republican majority has accused Grisham of attempting to usurp the authority of lawmakers to legislate on the right to bear arms.
Grisham has pushed back against the accusations and maintains that her order was lawful. She argued that the order was the strongest solution to ending gun violence in the state and that it was necessary due to the inaction of the legislature.
The New Mexico Supreme Court is expected to make a ruling on the legal merits of the executive order soon, but the impeachment process has already been put in motion. It remains to be seen if the Republican-majority legislature will be able to get the necessary votes to move forward with the impeachment.
