California state Senator Lena Gonzalez said that Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision to appoint California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to replace U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein was “insulting” to Black women, who are underrepresented in statewide political offices. Gonzalez went on to point out that Padilla’s pick “continues the erasure of the political power of Black women in California,” noting that while nearly 7 million African-American women live in California, only five out of the state’s 80 assembly members are Black women. She encouraged Newsom to choose a qualified Black woman for the Senate seat.
