Republican lawmakers are raising the alarm about the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to be used to sexually exploit children.
In a letter to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai, a bipartisan group of lawmakers requested action to prevent the malicious use of AI.
“There are reports of pedophiles using artificial intelligence to automate the process of targeting and grooming both children and adults to produce child pornography,” the lawmakers wrote.
The lawmakers stressed the need for the FCC to “lead the way in addressing this heightened threat to our children and women.”
The lawmakers suggested several possible solutions, including working with other relevant agencies and creating regulations that would require technology companies to report known instances of AI-assisted exploitation.
They also called for the FCC to look into ways to reduce the proliferation of AI-generated pornography, as well as consider the possibility of establishing a “federal safety commission” to regulate the use of AI.
The letter came on the heels of reports that tech companies like Google and Microsoft are working on AI-based tools that can be used to create realistic-looking pornographic images. As AI becomes more powerful, watchdog groups are increasingly concerned that it could be used to perpetrate acts of exploitation and violence.
