House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has made no secret of his displeasure with Democrats for their push to impeach President Donald Trump. He’s now openly turning the issue into a political score-settlement.
McCarthy has attacked Democratic lawmakers who have called for Trump’s impeachment, raising questions about whether those progressive members—including Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders—are also advocating to oust vice president Mike Pence, based on their criticism of both men.
McCarthy has argued that Democrats cannot simultaneously call for Trump’s removal from office and for a peaceful transfer of power on January 20th. He has also accused Democrats of wanting to impeach Trump because they are “angry” and “unhappy with the election results.”
McCarthy’s decision to make the impeachment a political issue indicates a clear strategy: to attempt to discredit the Democrats’ effort and rally support for Trump among his base. He hopes that, by focusing the national conversation on the political motives behind the impeachment, he will be able to blunt the momentum that Democrats have built.
