President Trump falsely accused Speaker Nancy Pelosi of rejecting his administration’s offer to provide 10,000 National Guard soldiers prior to the January 6th Capitol riots. Trump made these claims during an interview with Fox News, during which he repeated long-debunked conspiracy theories about the attack and suggested Pelosi was somehow to blame.
Pelosi’s spokesman, Drew Hammill, released a statement denying Trump’s claims, saying that on January 4th, the Speaker called for a “minimal, non-militarized presence” at the Capitol on the day of the riot. Hammill said Pelosi “has no authority to order the deployment of 10,000 National Guard troops.”
The United States Capitol Police had the authority to request additional personnel from the Department of the Defense. According to acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman, the request was not submitted until Saturday, the day before the riot. It can take up to 48 hours for the Pentagon to approve such a request.
Trump’s accusation that Pelosi is “responsible for Jan. 6” is baseless and untrue. Ultimately, the chaotic events on that day are the result of the failed response from the White House, the Justice Department, and the Department of Defense, who ignored warnings of a potential attack.
