The U.S. is planning to set up factories in Africa to meet surging global demand for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This could help create jobs and spur economic growth in the continent, which holds some of the world’s largest reserves of Lithium, a key component of EV batteries.
The plan was announced by the White House’s National Security Council’s, which said it was part of its broader “Electric Vehicle Revolution Initiative” to support the global electric vehicle market. The NSC said the initiative would involve nations from across Africa in order to promote collaborative research and development on clean energy, electric vehicles, and battery storage solutions.
The White House plans to use U.S. government agencies, such as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), to establish partnerships with African countries to build factories for EV and battery production. The White House also said it would work with the private sector to identify and support investments, as well as support the strengthening of African technical training and capacity-building institutions.
The plan to set up factories in Africa is part of the administration’s efforts to help countries reduce emissions and move towards a cleaner energy future, while also creating jobs and spurring economic growth. The effort also follows a number of similar initiatives by the U.S. and other global powers to bring EV technology to Africa.
