Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a sudden and urgent visit to Washington last week in an effort to strengthen the US-Ukraine partnership and receive international support for his country’s fight against Russian aggression.
Zelensky’s visit included meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and James Risch (R-ID), as well as other top U.S. officials. During his visit, Zelensky called on Congress to approve additional military aid and support for Ukraine in its ongoing battle against Kremlin forces.
He thanked the US for its previously-granted assistance, which he said had helped the Ukrainian forces receive training, resources, and equipment in the ongoing conflict. He further asked for an increase in arms supplies, intelligence support, and opportunities for joint military exercises with NATO countries.
The meeting also focused on ongoing concerns over alleged Russian influence in Ukraine’s elections and tighter sanctions against Kremlin-friendly oligarchs. After the meeting with Pence, Zelensky made an emotional plea for increased US aid, saying: “We want real allies, not just words…unless we have real allies, we will not stop this war against us.”
Zelensky’s visit appears to have been a success, with Pence signaling that America would continue to stand with Ukraine. The US also confirmed that it had committed to $250 million in additional security assistance for Ukraine, more than double the amount previously promised.
The visit demonstrated the urgent need for increased and ongoing US support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. With these added resources, Ukraine may be better able to repel Russian forces and protect its sovereignty.
