Ronald Reagan’s legacy of conservatism with a big-tent attitude is embraced by modern-day Republican candidates. Reagan was a vocal supporter of the GOP platform and instilled a sense of pride and promise for a better tomorrow as evidenced by his famous “A New Beginning” inaugural address. He was also an ardent supporter of fiscal responsibility, peace through strength, and a strong commitment to economic opportunity for all Americans.
In some ways, however, Reagan would likely find himself out of step in the current iteration of the GOP as he sought compromise and was known for his ability to find common ground with political opponents. He was not a fan of divisive rhetoric and was himself known as a “Great Confronter,” emphasizing the need to work together instead of lashing out against one’s enemies. Today’s Republican Party has distanced itself from Reagan’s brand of judgement-free leadership by utilizing the polarizing politics of President Trump, who has routinely attacked his critics and slandered his opponents in an effort to win over voters and steer the party in a more hard-right direction.
