At least 52 people were killed and several others were injured after an explosive device ripped through a religious procession in Balochistan province of southwest Pakistan.
The bomb was reportedly placed in the middle of the crowd and detonated when it was packed with Shi’ite Muslims celebrating Ashura day.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
The attack comes at a time of increased sectarian tensions in Pakistan, with Sunni extremist groups often targeting members of the Shi’ite Muslim minority.
In response to the attack, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan condemned the attack and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. He also pledged to provide financial compensation to the victims’ families.
The provincial government has ordered an inquiry into the incident. The Balochistan Interior Minister has vowed to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice.
