Tensions reached a boiling point in the Republican meeting of the House of Representatives on Wednesday morning, just hours before the government was set to shut down.
Republican leaders were unable to compromise on a spending bill that would keep the government open, and it seemed to be only a matter of time before the government would shutter its doors.
At the meeting, members began arguing about whether a spending bill should include measures addressing immigration, such as protecting young illegal immigrants known as Dreamers. Hardline conservatives argued that any spending bill should include measures that offer President Trump the concessions he wants on immigration, while moderate Republicans argued that those measures should be discussed in a separate bill.
At one point during the heated debate, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) yelled, “We got a bill that is DOA, and it’s called the Democrats’ bill.”
By the end of the meeting, Republican leaders had made little progress toward a solution. The government is now on the brink of its second shutdown in three weeks.
