The right’s elevation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could now backfire due to his newfound involvement in advocating for controversial medical practices. RFK Jr. has recently come out in support of Plandemic, an anti-vaccination conspiracy theory, and he’s been a vocal advocate of the unproven effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine against coronavirus. He also claimed he will investigate the causes of, and potential treatments for, autism. These positions contradict the anti-science stance of the right and have already sparked its own backlash from members of the conservative movement. The rise of RFK Jr. from an acceptable figure on the right to one its leaders in the crusade against vaccines and other science-based medical recommendations could now alienate the right from audiences that it wants to reach and tarnish its credibility.
