World leaders attending the United Nations General Assembly left relieved but exhausted after four days of intense diplomacy, with China escaping largely unscathed.
The summit put a spotlight on China’s human rights record for the first time, with US President Donald Trump calling the nation a “predator” and also citing its numerous trade disputes with the US.
However, a number of other leaders failed to criticise China directly, instead focussing on calling for global cooperation on issues such as climate change, poverty, migration and nuclear proliferation during their talks.
Despite fears that the summit could erupt into a full-blown conflict, it concluded successfully, with Russian President Vladimir Putin declaring that the talks had “helped to confirm the need to jointly address global problems and to build a more just and equitable world”.
In the end, the big takeaway from the summit appears to be one of exhaustion. Many leaders have come away from the summit with no clear chance to confront China over its various issues with the world, but the fact that no direct conflict occurred is still deemed a success.
