Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich recently suggested that Florida Republican congressman, Matt Gaetz, be removed from the House GOP caucus and committees following allegations of sexual misconduct. In an interview, Gingrich called the allegations “very serious” and said that “the House should investigate quickly and thoroughly.” He also suggested that if the lawmakers have any “moral judgement” they should push for Gaetz to be removed from the House Republican caucus and committees until the investigation is complete. While allowing for the presumption of innocence, Gingrich noted the allegations were “contentious.”
Currently, the representatives and leadership of the House Republican caucus have not made any public comments on potentially removing Gaetz from their ranks. However, following the public comments from Gingrich, there have been reports of private conversations among the leadership potentially indicating they would look into it. It is unclear whether the leadership will actually act on this and ultimately move to remove Gaetz from the GOP caucus and committees.
