Ivan Duque, the former president of Colombia, has called on the United States to take a more proactive role in Latin America. In an opinion piece for The Washington Post published on Sunday, Duque highlighted the issues of poverty, inequality and corruption in most Latin American countries and argued that US leadership was essential to resolving these challenges.
Duque pointed to US aid and support that Colombia has received since his political party took power in 2018, which he believes has been critical in developing peace and security in the country. He also highlighted the need for US engagement in areas such as trade, energy, development and human rights, and noted that US leadership was instrumental in helping Colombia and other nations in the region tackle challenges like drug trafficking and organized crime.
Duque concluded by expressing the hope that the United States would remain engaged in Latin America, both in terms of diplomatic outreach and economic assistance. He asserted that the region needed a humanitarian, not a political, agenda in order to fight poverty, grow economies, and strengthen democracy.
