Working in the office of Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has had an unexpected result for many of his employees — love.
Over the past four decades, at least 20 staffers for the 84-year-old politician have gotten married to each other- a record that appears to be unmatched in congressional history.
“It seems like a lot, but maybe it’s not,” Grassley said of his office’s success. “Sometimes it’s easy to represent Iowa in Washington and sometimes it’s hard.”
The staff’s marriage success has become the stuff of office legend, leading to a routine joke every time a new staffer is hired.
“It’s a standing joke, a tease,” Grassley said. “People come in the office, and you say, ‘Well, before you can go out the door after your interview, you have to tell us who you’re going to marry.'”
Over the years, Grassley and other staffers credit the close environment of the office as one reason for the marriages.
“I suspect it’s the chemistry of working together … you get to know the person you’re eventually going to marry,” said Grassley. “You even find out that you agree on issues.”
