The House of Representatives is expected to hold a vote on whether to approve Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as the new Speaker of the House. Reports indicate that the vote will take place today, and the outcome will determine whether Pelosi will become the third female Speaker of the House in US history.
However, the path to a majority for Pelosi in the House is a long and winding one. Reports indicate that a number of Republicans have voiced their opposition to her, a factor that could impact the outcome of the vote. In addition, several Democratic representatives from swing districts are expected to abstain from voting, although it is unclear how many will do so.
Pelosi is expected to receive support from her own party and the majority of independent members in the House, but it is uncertain if she can pull in enough votes from the two major camps of Republicans and Democrats to form a majority and be elected Speaker. Additionally, Pelosi needs to win 218 of the 435 votes those cast in order to become the third female Speaker of the House in US history.
At this point, the outcome of the vote remains anyone’s guess. However, one thing is clear: a lot of attention will be on Congress today as the House holds this important third-round Speaker vote.
