The calls for United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to resign intensified after he made comments that suggested a false moral equivalence between Israel’s response to Hamas rocket attacks and the aggression of the pro-Palestinian militant group.
Guterre condemned the violence on both sides and responded to a query about criticism of Israel by saying, “When we see that the indiscriminate launching of rockets against civilian populations, that is a disgrace, and of course it needs to be condemned, whatever the source of these rockets.”
The statement prompted outrage from members of both sides of the conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Guterres’ comparison of “a terrorist attacking and a democratic state defending itself” was “shameful.” Meanwhile, Palestinian officials claimed Guterres was unfairly giving credence to Israel’s position on the conflict.
International leaders, including US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, have called on Guterres to clarify his remarks. Some have even gone so far as to demand his resignation if he does not apologize for the comments.
