House Republicans have introduced a bill that would authorize $14 billion in aid to Israel over five years, with the funds being offset by cuts to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Cash in President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act of 2021.
The proposed legislation, sponsored by Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY), introduced the legislation in the House and is backed by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).
The bill would cut the amount the IRS is allowed to collect by $14 billion across the five-year period and offset the cost of the aid to Israel, which is expected to be around $10 billion over the five years.
The legislation also seeks to ensure the U.S. is “making a good-faith effort to fulfill its commitments to Israel,” an official said on condition of anonymity.
The bill has been met with praise from Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called the aid package “unprecedented.”
The legislation also has the support of many Democrats in the House and Senate, including Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD). The bill has yet to gain the approval of the full Congress, but a vote is expected soon.
