When Sen. Tommy Tuberville, (R-AL), recently suggested freezing military pay increases, many Senate Republicans were quick to express their outrage. Tuberville’s comments revealed a rift in the GOP on the defense budget and were met with criticism from both sides of the aisle. Some Republican Senators, such as Joni Ernst from Iowa, challenged Tuberville’s comments and pointed to the sacrifices that military personnel and their families have made during the pandemic. Other GOP Senators, such as Senator Lindsay Graham from South Carolina, called Tuberville’s suggestion “very shortsighted and ill-advised.” Leaders of the defense community, including the USAA, the organization representing the interests of current and former military service members, were also critical of the proposed freeze. Ultimately, Tuberville backpedaled on his comments and agreed that military pay increases should move forward.
