With nine weeks left until the first votes are cast in the 2020 race for the White House, President Donald Trump remains the commanding front-runner in the race for the Republican nomination.
Trump has a commanding lead in both national polls and early-state surveys as the rest of the crowded GOP field continues to shrink. He currently holds an average of around 90% support among registered Republican voters in polls, a far cry from the around 40% support his closest rival, former drug executive Bill Weld, is garnering.
The shrinking field is a result of several candidates — including former governors John Kasich, Mark Sanford, and former Massachusetts Governor and 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney — withdrawing from the race in recent months.
With the March primary and caucus season rapidly approaching and the conventions looming in August, the field of challengers keeps diminishing. Trump is in a strong position to clinch the nomination if he can maintain his lead as the crowded GOP field continues to shrink.
