Joe Biden is set to honor the White House Thanksgiving tradition when he turns 81 on Nov. 20. The President-elect will mark his birthday by pardoning a turkey in an official event that will follow the decades-old tradition.
The special moment will be included as part of President Obama’s annual pardon of a Thanksgiving turkey, and will be the first time a President-elect has participated in this time-honored event.
In recent years, the President has made it a tradition to pardon two turkeys- one for the White House kitchen and one for the National Turkey Federation. This year, however, the President-elect will join in the turkey pardoning for the first time ever, pardoning one bird on behalf of the Biden family.
The event will also include words from President-elect Biden about the importance of giving thanks and the significance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Following the turkey pardoning, Biden and his family will share a private dinner of Thanksgiving favorites.
While previous celebrations of Biden’s birthday have included family gatherings and private dinners, this year will be slightly different due to current public health regulations. However, Biden and his family will still make sure to spend some quality time together in the spirit of giving thanks.
