The body of Shani Gabay, an Israeli woman who had been missing for nearly a week, has been found, according to reports.
Mayor Yitzhak Arama, of the northern Israeli city Savyon, said in a statement Wednesday evening that “we have received the bitter news that the search led to the discovery of Shani’s body.” Gabay’s family has been notified, Arama said.
According to Israeli newspaper Maariv, Gabay’s body was found by a search party in a wooded area.
Gabay, who works for the local municipality, was last seen outside a store in Savyon, after which there were no traces of her. Hundreds had taken part in the search for the 57-year-old mother of four.
For five days, authorities mounted a massive effort to locate Gabay, and a man was arrested in connection with her disappearance. The suspect, who is a resident of nearby Pardes Hana, initially denied any involvement in the case. He was remanded for an additional five days following his arrest.
Arama said that the municipality would provide assistance to Gabay’s family and “do everything it takes” to support them. He added that her death is a “painful loss” and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy.
