Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and the White House have sparred over the Biden administration’s response to tensions between Israel and the Palestinians.
The White House accused Cruz of “spreading lies” after the senator suggested President Joe Biden had not taken a stronger stance against the violence that occurred during recent clashes between Israel and Hamas.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Tuesday said Cruz was “wrong” to suggest the administration had not spoken out “loudly and strongly on condemnation of the violence.”
The White House’s response followed Cruz’s appearance on Fox News where he argued that the Biden administration “should have come down like a ton of bricks” on the violence from Hamas.
“The Biden administration unfortunately has refused to do that. They have a pattern of coddling terrorists,” Cruz said, to which Psaki responded, “That is a lie.”
The Biden administration has repeatedly condemned the violence committed by Hamas and issued a statement in support of Israel’s right to self-defense. In a statement on May 15, the White House urged Israel and the Palestinians to deescalate tensions and calm the situation. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also echoed the president’s call for de-escalation in a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
