On Friday, Hamas released thirteen Israeli prisoners and another eleven as part of a cease-fire deal that has been in effect in the Gaza Strip since May 2021. This is the first time Hamas has released Israeli hostages since the start of the latest round of violence between the two sides last month. The release of the hostages is seen as a positive step towards building trust between Israel and Hamas. The prisoners had been held by Hamas for up to two years. The agreement also includes the release of dozens of Palestinians who are being held by the Israeli government.
