Justin Trudeau has blamed “right-wing, American MAGA” followers for the Canadian Conservative Party’s vote against legislation that would have strengthened Canada’s relationship with Ukraine. The bill sought to provide assistance to Ukraine’s defense sector and expand trade and investment.
Trudeau accused the Conservative Party of being influenced by right-wing, American voices, such as the “Make America Great Again” slogan associated with U.S. President Donald Trump, which he said is the same anti-foreign sentiment that had motivated attacks against Ukraine and its people.
“The Conservative Party had an opportunity to stand up for Ukraine, a country that has been invaded and annexed by another country — Russia. Ukraine’s people are struggling to survive,” Trudeau said in a statement.
He added: “Instead, the Conservatives chose to be influenced by an attitude perpetuated by some right-wing, American MAGA types, who are against any kind of foreign engagement and cooperation. It’s disappointing that the Conservative Party bowed to those demands.”
