President Donald Trump took aim at former Secretary of State John Kerry’s climate activism efforts during a town hall in Iowa on Wednesday, labeling them as “destructive” and stating that “he has to be stopped.”
Trump’s comments came in response to a question from a local resident who asked what the administration was doing to help farmers and rural America combat the effects of climate change.
The president responded by criticizing Kerry, saying that his efforts to collaborate with other countries on climate initiatives were tied to other countries receiving “billions and billions of dollars” from the U.S. Trump mentioned India as an example of a country that had received money from the U.S. for climate initiatives.
Trump went on to claim that Kerry’s efforts to draft and participate in climate agreements with other countries was “destroying our country” because it was costing U.S. jobs and putting the U.S. at a disadvantage competitively. Trump appeared to mix in comments about trade tariffs in his response before concluding that “he has to be stopped.”
