The recent comments made by US President Donald Trump’s former National Security Adviser John Bolton, in which he called Trump “the closest thing” America has had to a dictator, have reignited criticism of the president that his camp has been trying to quell.
The comments come after weeks of the Trump administration trying to downplay the president’s authoritarian behavior, including his use of executive orders to bypass Congress and the courts.
Critics of Trump say that the comments of Bolton, who served as National Security Adviser for almost 18 months, are a direct result of his autocratic style of governance. They argue that Trump has often acted unilaterally, disregarding the rule of law and overriding the will of both chambers of Congress.
Others have argued that Trump’s use of executive orders is the only option open to the president in the face of a GOP-controlled Senate that has often refused to pass legislation that the president favors. Nevertheless, Bolton’s comments have brought the criticism of Trump into sharp focus, and are likely to be used as evidence of the president’s autocratic tendencies.
