On January 29, 2021, the Colorado Supreme Court unanimously ruled that former President Donald Trump will be barred from the state’s 2024 primary ballot. In its decision, the court found that Trump violated a state law that requires presidential candidates to affirm they have “not advocated the use of violence or any form of lawless action.” The ruling was in response to a lawsuit filed by Colorado’s Democratic Secretary of State Jena Griswold who argued that by making false claims of the 2020 election being “stolen” and his supporters’ storming of the U.S. Capitol, Trump had advocated for lawless action and should be blocked from appearing on the state’s primary ballot. The ruling is expected to stand, as no appeal is expected to be filed.
