The Houthi rebels of Yemen said they will continue to attack merchant ships in the Red Sea, despite the formation of the US-led international task force to protect the waters of the region from malign activities. The Houthis have been attacking merchant ships from the Red Sea since the beginning of their war against the Saudi-led coalition in 2015.
The recent formation of the Combined Task Force 150 by the United States and several Gulf nations in the Red Sea is meant to stop any attempts by Iran or its proxies to carry out operations targeting merchant ships. In response, the Houthis have said they would continue to counter “hostile naval activity” within the Red Sea.
The United States and partner nations actively monitor these events and strive to ensure freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Red Sea and other international water ways. This task force will be responsible for monitoring and detecting maritime smuggling attempts, including Iranian weapons shipments. The US and its allies believe these dangerous shipments are a major threat to regional stability, and the task force will work to prevent these threats from increasing.
Going forward, it is essential for all nations to work together to ensure the safety and security of the entire Red Sea region. Ultimately, the Houthis have the right to defend themselves from perceived aggression, but they must do so in a safe and responsible manner that does not create additional risks to the stability of the region.
