The European Commission announced yesterday, July 30th, that the implementation of the new Travel System for Europe (TES) will be further delayed until 2025. The new system was initially scheduled to be partially implemented in 2022, but was delayed until 2024 due to a variety of reasons, including the need to complete research and technological advancement.
The TES system is intended to improve both travel safety and security, as well as secure border control. It features a standardized and comprehensive identification service, as well as a secure online platform to register, verify, and store personal data for travelers using European Union member states.
The Commission said that the decision to delay the completion of the new system has been taken for safety and security reasons. Due to ongoing security and technical challenges, such as border security and human factor issues, the Commission has determined that the development time needs to be extended.
The Commission is committed to providing secure and timely implementation of the TES system, and ensuring that it meets the highest standards of the European Union Regulation on Traveller Information. In order to achieve this, the Commission is working closely with experts from member states, as well as with industry partners, to ensure the system meets the highest standards of data protection.
The Commission is confident that the project will be completed on time and with due care for safety, security and privacy standards. It is also developing an information campaign to ensure citizens and businesses understand the benefits of the new system.
