President Joe Biden is expanding a clemency effort for those convicted of marijuana offenses in the District of Columbia, a move that comes days after his administration announced an initiative to review federal marijuana convictions for possible clemency.
Under the initiative announced Monday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District will expand its weed pardon program to include those who were convicted of misdemeanor marijuana offenses in D.C. Circuit Court, in addition to those already eligible under the program, including those convicted of misdemeanor possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and EVSD, the criminalization of driving under the influence of marijuana. The program will also allow for the diversion of those sentences to alternative punishment, such as community service or drug treatment programs.
Additionally, those eligible for the program who have completed their sentences within the last two years will have additional support services available to them as part of their clemency package.
The effort is focused on providing relief to those in the nation’s capital who may have been disproportionately impacted by criminal justice enforcement for marijuana-related offenses. It follows the Biden Administration’s commitment to increase racial equity in the justice system.
The hope is that this initiative will help ensure that D.C. residents who have served their sentences receive the fresh start they deserve.
