On April 23, 2021, the Maine State Supreme Judicial Court ruled that the Maine Secretary of State could not place Donald Trump on the Maine Republican presidential primary ballot in 2024. The Court found that Maine’s election laws “do not authorize the Secretary of State to add a person’s name as a candidate to the primary ballot without express authorization from the state or national party.” The ruling affirmed the decision of Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows to remove Trump from the ballot, citing the state’s election laws which require that names only be allowed if they are nominated by the state political party. The Court ruled that Trump was not nominated by either the state or national Republican Party, and therefore, the Secretary of State lacked the authority to add his name to the ballot. This decision comes after the Republican National Committee (RNC) voted last month to block Trump’s name from appearing on ballots affiliated with them until he renounces “false statements” about the 2020 election.
