The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is set to be a busy place in 2024, with a number of landmark cases related to the events and issues of today being brought before it.
The rioters who stormed the Capitol on January 6 are likely to be put in the spotlight as prosecutors across the nation bring the most prominent rioters to justice. A likely outcome of such cases, should it reach the highest court in the land, is a precedent that could be used in future prosecutions.
Another significant issue that will come under the scrutiny of the Supreme Court will be abortion rights. After a succession of controversial state laws designed to limit the access and choice of abortion have been tested in the courts, it could ascend to the highest court in the nation for adjudication. The federal government could also enact a law that seeks to limit or expand access to abortion, setting up a major debate in the Supreme Court of the United States.
The landmark case of Heller vs. District of Columbia, which upheld an individual’s right to possess firearms in the home for the purpose of self-defense, could see the court field another case on gun rights. Whether it be a challenge to state laws limiting access, possession or use of firearms, or a case coming from outside the court’s jurisdiction, SCOTUS could be hearing cases on gun rights for years to come.
Given the highly polarized climate in the United States and the way in which the issues of today will be coming before the Supreme Court in the years ahead, the decisions handed down will have sweeping implications for generations to come.
