Tennessee lawmakers have so far refused to take action on guns in the aftermath of the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting. Despite the inaction, one mother, Sybrina Fulton, is still determined to push for change.
Since February 2018, the Republican legislature has blocked proposed gun control legislation such as universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons. Fulton, however, is staying hopeful. She became an advocate for gun reform after her son Trayvon Martin was tragically killed in 2012.
Fulton has been traveling to Nashville and Washington to advocate for gun reform legislation and the turning point in gun culture throughout the United States. She has joined forces with other parents of gun violence victims, students and grassroots organization in hopes of making a change.
At a town hall event in Atlanta in March 2018, Fulton told attendees, “We have to learn to rise above the noise and ensure our voices are heard. We don’t have to be direct victims of gun violence to speak out for the future of our children.”
Fulton has continued to press Tennessee lawmakers to take action. With a strong committed resolve, her work is inspiring others to take a stand as well.
