Kamala Harris, the former U.S. Senator from California, held a private fundraiser at her San Francisco residence featuring several high-profile political donors, including the heir of billionaire George Soros and top contributors to her past campaigns, according to a report by the Associated Press.
The event, held in August 2018, was attended by Alexander Soros, the son of liberal megadonor George Soros, as well as members of the San Francisco Bay Area’s wealthy tech community. Other influential local figures included San Francisco Mayor London Breed and the first African-American woman to serve as San Francisco district attorney, Terence Hallinan.
The event was held prior to Harris’ launch of her presidential campaign in January 2019 and came alongside similar exclusive fundraisers with wealthy donors at other private residences in the Bay Area.
At the event, Harris reportedly praised the audience for their past commitment to helping advance her political career and thanked them for their support. The candidate used the opportunity to discuss her plans for the 2020 presidential bid, including her stance on criminal justice reform and health care.
While details surrounding the event remain scarce, the fact that Harris was able to bring together some of the country’s most powerful donors and influential political figures speaks to her prowess as a fundraiser, as well as her drawing power as a candidate. By continuing to hold intimate fundraisers with wealthy elites, Harris was able to build a war chest of influential contributors that could potentially serve as a major benefit in her 2020 presidential bid.
