Texas has reportedly sent its 12th bus carrying migrants to Los Angeles, which could be cause for legal action despite the city’s sanctuary status.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Mayor Eric Garcetti said the state and federal government sent numerous buses carrying nearly 4,000 people combined to the city since April.
“We are hitting that breaking point,” Garcetti told the paper in an interview. “We will take legal action if necessary, so this doesn’t become a regular occurrence.”
Despite the Los Angeles City Council’s approval of a sanctuary policy in 2017, officials say the city has yet to receive any official notice from the Texas state government regarding the newly arrived group of migrants.
In response to the 12th bus, a spokesperson from the Texas Department of Public Safety said the agency “follows and obeys legal guidelines concerning the movement of individuals within or into the state.”
Mayor Garcetti also noted that the migrants had been tested negative for COVID-19 before they were relocated, but expressed his concern that overcrowding in Los Angeles could endanger public health.
The growing influx of migrants has alarmed nearby residents, who have spoken up about their lack of knowledge about the conditions of the shelters providing temporary housing for those who have been relocated to Los Angeles.
Officials say they plan to utilize federal funds from the Families First Coronavirus Relief Act to deal with the influx of migrants. City funds may also be used to provide support to organizations providing services for the migrants.
