Former Biden aide Kobi Dennis won a special congressional primary in Rhode Island on Tuesday, setting the stage for her to become the first African American and first openly LGBTQ person to represent the state in Congress.
Dennis, 43, a veteran of the Biden White House, won the Democratic nomination in a three-way race to represent Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District, a racially diverse swath of Providence and its surrounding suburbs. The seat was vacated earlier this year after Rep. David N. Cicilline was re-elected to the House in the 2020 elections.
With no Republican running in the deep blue district, Dennis is almost certain to win the special election next month and assume office as soon as June. If she does, she will become the first Black person to represent Rhode Island in Congress, and the second openly LGBTQ person to be elected to Congress from the state.
