The House Oversight Committee has launched an investigation into what it is calling a “disturbing pattern” of travel safety failures under the leadership of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
In a letter from Chairman Carolyn Maloney and Rep. James Comer, the committee outlines several security lapses, including that Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers were found to have fallen asleep while on duty, and that airport personnel and travelers were put at risk by allowing access to “unauthorized and unmonitored areas.”
The committee is also requesting documents and communications relating to Buttigieg’s efforts to address the security issues at airports, along with any documents related to a November 2020 incident in which TSA employees were found asleep on the job.
The committee is seeking to determine if Buttigieg’s actions “have been sufficient to materially improve airport security” and if not, “why not?”
It is also requesting any documents related to how the Department of Transportation will ensure safety protocols are in place to protect passengers and personnel in the future. In addition, the committee is looking into any efforts by the department to review, investigate, and respond to reports of security lapses, and for any corrective measures taken to address the “substantial security gaps” at airports.
