In early April 2021, more than three dozen New York City teachers won their jobs back with backpay after refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine, the American Federation of Teachers said. The union won a settlement with the city to reverse the terminations of 33 teachers from 21 public schools, which sparked a national conversation on vaccine policies in the workplace. AFT President Randi Weingarten described the settlement as a victory for labor and labor rights, saying it sets a nationwide precedent. The union had argued that the teachers’ dismissal was “unlawful and misguided.” The teachers will get their jobs and backpay for the time they were out of work. They will also receive full benefits starting on the April 1, 2021, the date they were originally terminated.
