Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. announced on January 14, 2021 that CEO Roz Brewer is stepping down after more than two years in the role. Walgreens Boots Alliance Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Stefano Pessina will assume the role of CEO on an interim basis, effective immediately. Brewer leaves the company to join Starbucks Corporation as President and Chief Operating Officer.
Brewer’s accomplishments at Walgreens included launching a $1 billion transformation initiative to modernize stores, create an enhanced digital experience, introduce new products, and leverage technology, as well as expanding the company’s focus on health and wellness. During her tenure, Walgreens achieved improved financial performance, delivered consistent growth and increased customer loyalty and satisfaction.
Walgreens will immediately launch a search process to identify a permanent CEO. Pessina will add the role of CEO to his existing responsibilities while the search is underway. Walgreens also announced that it will form a new executive position with the title “Chief Transformation Officer” to lead ongoing efforts to transform the business.
