for Asia trip
President Joe Biden concluded his trip to the G-20 Summit on Saturday as he and other heads of state discussed a wide variety of global issues. Biden is now headed to Vietnam for the second leg of his Asia trip where he is scheduled to meet with Vietnamese leaders and attend the U.S.-ASEAN Summit.
There, his goal is to “strengthen our partnership with ASEAN countries to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific region and to address regional issues of mutual concern, from climate change, to COVID-19, and other humanitarian and security threats.”
Biden’s trip to Vietnam marks the first visit of a sitting U.S. president to the country in almost three decades. He is expected to discuss issues surrounding human rights, economic growth and trade, and regional security with Vietnamese leaders.
The president also plans to meet with ASEAN leaders to discuss ways to strengthen ties between the U.S. and the organization.
Biden’s Asia trip is a part of his effort to reassert the U.S. as a leader in the region after four years of disengagement from former President Donald Trump. The trip is undoubtedly a chance to expand diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the United States and the countries he is visiting.
