On Tuesday, President Donald Trump’s lawyers filed a motion to recuse judge Amy Berman Jackson from presiding over a federal trial involving Russian interference in the 2020 election. The motion raised questions about the judge’s impartiality after she issued a recent order that restricted the number of witnesses Trump’s team could call.
The motion claims that Jackson should recuse herself under a provision of the federal code that allows it if “the court’s impartiality might reasonably be questioned.”
Jackson has been presiding over the trial of Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort since late 2017. Manafort was convicted of financial fraud in 2018 and is currently serving a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence.
The recent order limited the number of witnesses Trump’s lawyers could call, while allowing prosecutors to call them. Trump’s lawyers argued that the decision was evidence of bias against their client.
Jackson has yet to rule on the motion, but lawyers on both sides will reportedly have the opportunity to argue their positions in a hearing on Thursday.
