The effort to ban mask mandates on public transportation is gaining steam as another big supporter joins the fight. The Koch-backed group Americans for Prosperity is now advocating for an end to the requirement that riders wear masks on buses and trains. The group is joining with a group of lawmakers and disability rights groups in calling for a repeal of mask mandates on public transportation and an end to restrictions that some public transit agencies have placed on passengers who cannot wear masks due to medical conditions or disabilities. The growing coalition is led by FreedomWorks and includes lawmakers and disability rights advocates, including Heather Nichols, the director of the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund’s Advocacy Initiatives. It is encouraging advocates to contact their congressional representatives in support of the effort. The coalition says that mask mandates are intrusive and a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. It also says that some people are unable to wear masks due to medical conditions or disabilities, and that there are alternative ways to reduce the spread of the coronavirus such as frequent sanitization of buses and trains and making sure other riders maintain social distancing.
