In an escalation of the rhetoric between the two 2020 presidential candidates, Republican hopeful Mitt Romney called for Joe Biden to call it quits – and join him in retirement.
Romney said Biden had been “complicit” with the “failures” of the Obama-Biden administration, and took aim at Biden’s record by quoting a statement the former vice-president made recently about not wanting to “pass the torch” to the White House.
“Mr. Vice President, it’s time to transition. It’s time for both of us to retire from active political service,” Romney said in a statement Tuesday.
Romney went on to single out Biden for lack of transparency in the Obama-Biden years. “You promised a ‘transparent’ administration, but your actions prove otherwise,” Romney said.
He added that another term for Biden’s party would ultimately damage his legacy.
“You know as well as I do, and the American people know, that President Trump has been a far better leader than you or President Obama were. The only way to protect your legacy is to join me in retirement, not another term of going back to the failed policies of the past,” he said.
The statement from Romney is the latest salvo in a months-long battle between the two candidates. Biden has regularly shared barbs with the White House and some of his fellow Democrats, while Romney often takes swipes at Democrats, including Biden, in an effort to establish himself as the more conservative option.
The ongoing sparring is heating up as the November election increases in intensity.
