On October 26, 2020, Steve Peltola, husband of Alaska State Representative Mary Peltola, died in a small airplane crash near their home in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The plane, a Cessna 182, departed from Fairbanks and went down just before 8 a.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Two people were on board, the pilot and one passenger, according to the Alaska Air National Guard, which performed the search-and-rescue operation.
Peltola represented Alaska House District 4 in Fairbanks South since 2015. She has a long history of public service, as the city of Fairbanks’ first female mayor and the chair of the Board of Regents at the University of Alaska.
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy released a statement via Twitter following the news of Peltola’s death.
“Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to Alaska State Representative Mary Peltola and her entire family following the tragic passing of her husband, Steve Peltola, today,” Dunleavy tweeted. “We are truly saddened by this loss and offer our deepest condolences.”
