A recent theft of digital currency from Fortress Trust, a Hong Kong-based company, has been traced back to a phishing attack on cloud vendor Amazon Web Services. According to reports, the attacker used a malicious email to lure an employee of the company into providing their AWS credentials, which were then used to gain access to Fortress’ MySQL database. Once inside the system, the hacker was able to transfer a large sum of digital currency to a separate account.
The exact amount of currency stolen is not yet known, however reports indicate that it was a “considerable” amount.
The attack underscores the importance of organizations taking additional measures to protect their data on cloud services, as well as educating their staff on the risks posed by phishing and other social engineering attacks. With breaches becoming more commonplace, it is critical for companies to understand the risks associated with their cloud vendors and take proactive steps to secure their systems. This includes implementing comprehensive data security measures such as encryption, access control policies, and audit logging. It is also important for organizations to provide their staff with proper training to help them recognize and report suspicious emails and activity.
