At the center of the IRS-Hunter Biden dispute is Hunter Biden, the son of the former President Joe Biden. Biden has been accused of not properly reporting his income from international consulting contracts, which the IRS claims is due to him in back taxes. Biden has denied the allegations, accusing the IRS of making a “witch hunt” out of his financial dealings.
The other key players in the dispute are the IRS, whose investigators are scrutinizing Biden’s financial records; the White House, which has denied any political motivation behind the agency’s inquiry; and Biden’s lawyer, George Mesires, who has argued that the IRS is wrongfully targeting his client.
Mesires and Biden have both argued that the IRS’s inquiry is politically motivated, with Mesires saying that the inquiry is “an abuse of power” by the Trump administration. Biden has also said that the inquiry is “another distraction” from the recent presidential election.
The other leading voices in the dispute include Congressmen who have been critical of the investigation, such as Republican Kevin Brady (TX-14) and Democrats Bill Pascrell (NJ-09) and Lloyd Doggett (TX-35). Both Brady and Doggett have called for an investigation into what they see as political interference with the IRS. Meanwhile, Pascrell has called for an investigation into whether the IRS is singling out Biden for special treatment.
Finally, the IRS itself has defended its inquiry as an ongoing effort to enforce the law and protect taxpayer’s rights. The agency has argued that it has a duty to ensure that taxpayers are paying their fair share of taxes and that no one is given special treatment.
