Congress has failed to reach a spending deal and time is running out before the government shuts down at midnight Friday. With hours remaining, lawmakers remain far apart on a host of issues, including border security and immigration, as well as defense spending and health care.
The Senate is expected to pass a continuing resolution, which would fund the government through February 8. The House is expected to vote on the measure later today, though it is unclear if they have the votes to pass it.
If Congress fails to pass a spending bill, the government will shutter non-essential services, which could include national parks, military commissaries, and the Smithsonian museums. Essential services such as mail delivery and air traffic control would stay open.
It’s unclear how long a government shutdown could last. The last shutdown extended for a record-breaking 35 days in late 2018 and early 2019.
Negotiations on a spending bill will continue in the coming days as members of Congress attempt to hash out a consensus on the issues. Lawmakers hope to have an agreement in place by the end of the week so the government may avoid a shutdown.
