In April 2021, Nansen, a UK-based asset management company, was the victim of a cyberattack that affected the third-party vendors that interacted with the company. The attackers used the malicious software Defray77 to penetrate the network of the UK firm. The attackers then accessed confidential data from the network, including customer financial files, as well as banking and password details. The attackers demanded a ransom in Bitcoin to stop the attack, and despite Nansen working with law enforcement to try and prevent the attack, the company had to pay the ransom in order to protect their customers. The attack affected hundreds of customers and third-party vendors connected to Nansen, and the company has since worked to increase its security measures to prevent similar attacks from happening in the future.
