House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries proposed a last-ditch effort to avoid a government shutdown by sending a continuing resolution to fund the government’s operations through December. Jeffries suggested utilizing a rarely used manuever that would require just a simple majority by bypassing House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
“The best way to avoid a shutdown is for Leader McCarthy to accept the Senate’s bipartisan appropriations bill,” Jeffries said in a statement. “It is fully funded and includes important protections for those in need. After all, in this historical moment of national crisis, Americans should not have to worry about continued government disruptions.”
Should McCarthy and his Republican colleagues not agree, Jeffries proposed relying on the legislative tablet which “allows the House to pass a bill with a simple majority of those voting, a total that could include House Democrats only – then we will do that.”
The proposal, under the legislative tablet, would allow the House to pass appropriations bills with a simple majority vote, circumventing the ability of House Republicans to hold up the appropriations process through objections in the House.
Jeffries’ suggestion is viewed as a potential way to avert the looming threat of a government shutdown this September. It remains to be seen whether Jeffries’ proposal will gain traction with both sides of the aisle or if it will even be necessary given the current bipartisan talks.
